Christmas in Telluride

This week we received the new Eddie Bauer Christmas catalog featuring Christmas in Telluride photos. I'm not advertising for them, just thought you may want to click on the link above to see the photo of the group in front of Wilson Peak at the top of lift 12, where I took many photos last winter.

Also, back on June 8 we met Meeker the black lab that was a model in the catalog. Great job, Meeker!

Snow Hike

There have been enough people hiking up to Bear Creek Falls to pack down the snow enough that we hiked the trail on Tuesday. First I had to take a picture of the reflection of Ajax Peak. Last week's photo that I took here was very different with low clouds hanging during the snowstorm. I don't remember if this tree was across the trail the last time we were up here.
This rock actually has a name. Bet you can guess what it is--Big Rock.
At first view of the waterfall it appears to be entirely frozen. As you get closer, you can hear some water flowing under the ice.
The snow wasn't packed down the closer we got to the falls and obviously Jay and I were the first ones to go that far since last week's snow.
The pictures of the waterfall came out pretty dark since it is in a deep and narrow canyon. The next photo is from our hike in June. Quite a different view!
The creek below the falls has a little water running just from the snow and ice melting in the places that do get some sun.
As we exited the trail onto Pine Street, I caught another reflection shot next to these condos.
This was definitely our last hike of the year. Next week we will be in Oklahoma visiting our family and after we get back we'll be SKIING!!

Girl Day

Once a year the girls and I have a day somewhere around the holidays that we call Girl Day, which we spend shopping, going out to eat, whatever we want to do without any men or boys. Savanna and Maralee were out of school Friday for a teacher work day, but Garrett still had school, so it was a good opportunity to get away. We descended from the mountains to shop in Montrose. If we wanted to go to a real mall, we could have driven all the way to Grand Junction, but we spend most of our time at Target on days like this.Even though Montrose isn't in the mountains like Telluride, it still has an elevation of 5,794 feet, still higher than Denver and almost as high as Colorado Springs. The population is only around 17,000, but since Montrose and Grand Junction are the largest cities on the Western Slope, Montrose has several restaurants and places to shop. It's much smaller than our hometown of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, but offers enough stores to make us feel like it's a big city.
We found a nice ski jacket for Maralee at Target, and Savanna surprised me by picking out a fairly dressy outfit at JC Penney's for her band concert. The sunset was so pretty seen here from the Papa Murphy's parking lot when we stopped to have a pizza made to take home to bake. Dinner was pretty late by the time we drove the 1 1/2 hours back home. Savanna had to be at the school at 6:15 AM to leave for her basketball game in Ignacio today. I hope she isn't feeling tired!

Let It Snow

Tuesday we were enjoying 6 more inches of new snow, and I took a walk across town on the river trail. It was 36 degrees and I stayed plenty warm and enjoyed the walk. I've been waiting to take a picture of the birdhouses behind the Ah Haa School For the Arts. I thought snow would be a nice touch to the colors.
Telluride Ski Resort has a snow machine going near the gondola station. I've noticed three machines going strong on our side of the mountain.
When the snow clouds are hanging low over Ajax it always looks really mystical and makes me think of what Norway must look like. If you would like to see some beautiful Norway pictures, check out Ivar Ivrig’s blog in Trondheim, Norway. I found his blog from following The Rocky Mountain Retreat Photography in British Columbia, Canada.
I was thinking of my nephew, Parker, when I took this video of the snow machine. Not only do we get tons of snow, we make some, too!! video

Destiny the Hedgehog

Savanna was picked this weekend to babysit her class pet Destiny. The class got to vote on what kind of pet they wanted to buy and then they raised money by doing chores at home for the teacher to buy her. Jay and the kids are really wanting one now, but I think a cat, chinchilla and 2 ferrets are enough. We haven't gotten the hang of picking Destiny up yet. Savanna is wearing gloves because Destiny can really hurt you when you pick her up, and hisses when you startle or scare her. Overall I think a hedgehog would make a great pet and I would seriously consider it if we didn't already have so many.

Telluride Miners Basketball

Savanna played her first basketball game this morning against Norwood. We lost, but the team is still learning. This is Savanna's third year to play, but she skipped a year. I think it's all coming back to her now. Savanna just passed the ball and fell here. It made for a cool picture.
Just for the grandparents and Parker (and whoever else is interested) here's a video I took during the game. Savanna is number 4.

21 Days to Ski Season

Election night brought us a new President and SNOW!! It looks like the brown time of year is over. There was a good 4 to 5 inches on my Jeep this morning and we could get up to 16 inches by tomorrow. Sweeping powder off of the Jeep is so much better than having to scrape ice off of the windows! Last year ski season opening was delayed because we didn't have any snow at all. We had a warm and brown Thanksgiving, then had a big dump of snow the day after. Everyone is panicking about the economy and how many tourists will travel to ski here this winter, so the last thing we would need is to worry about no snow. A lot of the hotels and lodges are advertising some really good deals this winter already.
I couldn't keep Maralee out of the snow. I had to say, "Go in! Go in!" when I dropped her off at school.
I think Jay is a little frustrated now since we won't be here the week ski season opens. Opening day is November 26th, which will also be my dad's 60th birthday and we will be in Oklahoma for that and Thanksgiving. Jay was kind of counting on no snow like last year. He'll just have to be patient and wait until the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
This morning we even had a WENS alert from the county that there is poor visibility on highways 145 and 62. WOOHOOO!!!

A New President Is Coming

I was saving these pictures from the Halloween parade until after the election results, whether Obama won or lost. The parade is meant to be for the kids, but someone really put a great deal of work into this.
The Obama kids get to take a new puppy to the White House. WOW!! Most kids have to get good grades or help keep their room clean for a certain amount of time to get a new pet. These kids had to wait until their dad became President!
It appears that not only am I older than most of Garrett's teachers this year, but I've been married for longer than the President! That's crazy!

The Brown Time of Year

Waiting for spring and waiting for winter here is dominated by the color brown. Brown is boring. I prefer the white, green and gold times of the year. The good thing about the weather lately is it has still been nice enough to get outside for some exercise.
This is the Brown homestead alongside the spur. It was originally the site of San Miguel City back in 1877. I read somewhere of someone complaining about the cost of lots in the area in 1882. HAHA!!

Halloween Night

Maralee's costume was very easy and kept her nice and warm. I think Savanna wore this costume I bought on eBay when she was about 8 years old, and I saved it for Maralee.

Savanna was a skater vampire. It was actually my idea. I've been reading the Twilight series and now Savanna has started to read it. I've been a big fan of vampires ever since The Lost Boys. Garrett was, uh, his jacket. He only got to trick-or-treat for a little while in between movies since he works at the theater on Friday nights. There were so many cool jack-o-lanterns around town that I had to take pictures of!! One of the least scary decorations was the Peanuts gang. I didn't get a clear picture of it, but wanted to share it anyway. The kids didn't get any rocks in their treat bags, but strangely they did each get one peanut. I'm wondering if it was from this house.

Some people go all out with Halloween decorations these days. It amazes me when people do this and don't decorate for Christmas at all.
